Alain BRUNET Quelques repères…

• Il commence à jouer de la trompette à l’âge de 10 ans au sein de l’harmonie de Saint Sorlin en Valloire…..

• A 20 ans, il dirige un ensemble vocal et instrumental à Valence (Drôme) avec lequel il se produit en concert dans la région Rhône-Alpes et en 1973, il est le premier étudiant en musicologie à écrire un mémoire de maîtrise sur le jazz (Sorbonne Paris IV). Il crée, la même année, son premier orchestre professionnel, avec lequel il enregistre pour France-Musique.

• Il enregistre son premier disque avec le big band « Machi-oul » de Manuel Villaroel en 1975, crée le département de jazz du conservatoire de Romans (Drôme), ainsi que le grand orchestre de jazz de la Drôme, qu’il dirigera jusqu’en 1984, avec pour pianiste un certain Michel Petrucciani. Il fonde, la même année, le MODULE-Alain Brunet Quintet avec le batteur Jacques Bonnardel.( nombreux concerts en région Rhône-Alpes).

•  Il participe au festival de Chateauvallon à la tête d'un quartet composé de Daniel Humair, Henri Texier et Manuel Villaroel (1976), ainsi qu'au festival de Vienne (1980). Il représente la France au sein du big band constitué, une fois l'an, par l'union européenne des radios et télévisions (UER) à Helsinki (Finlande) en1979.

 

•  Il enregistre des émissions de radio et de télévision avec les formations déjà citées et participe à la plupart des festivals de jazz en France et à l'étranger. En 1980, il est choisi par le Ministère des affaires étrangères pour effectuer une tournée de concerts en Afrique de l'Est, conclue par l'enregistrement d'un disque (Module - le geste du cachou)

 

•  Il enregistre son premier CD en 1991 pour Label bleu en quintet avec Denis Badault, Yves Torchinski, Francis Lassus et la participation de Didier Lockwood.

 

•  Il travaille sur la musique de Serge Gainsbourg entre 1992 et 1996 avec le pianiste Olivier Hutman. Il participe aux festivals de Montréal, Toronto, La nouvelle Orléans, Newport, Varsovie, Montreux, Nice, Paris-la Villette, Rome, Ramatuelle etc Il enregistre un disque pour WEA consacré à Serge Gainsbourg (1993).

 

•  Il effectue une tournée aux Etats-Unis et au Canada en mai 1995 conclue par l'enregistrement d'un disque à Los-Angeles consacré à la chanson française. (RDC Records). Il joue, comme soliste de jazz, avec des formations classiques telles que La Camerata de France, le Sinfonietta de Chambord, l'orchestre de l'opéra de Marseille, L'ensemble instrumental de Romans ..

 

•  Il fait l'objet d'un portrait en images par le réalisateur François Reichenbach et co-anime avec Eve Ruggiéri plusieurs « musiques au cour » consacrées au jazz (antenne 2 1992-1994). Il est, depuis 1996, membre du sextet de Prince Lawsha, orchestre de la côte ouest américaine qui est sous contrat avec Sony music. (album planetary rythms Oakland Californie aout1997).

 

•  Il enregistre à nouveau avec le sextet de Prince Lawsha et sous la direction de Kenneth Nash, un deuxième album pour Sony-music (Oakland -Californie-avril 1999). Il se produit en soliste avec le Lorient-big-band (tournée dans le Pacifique-sud avril 99), avec Ugoy-Ugoy band (Manille-Philippines :juin 99), et effectue son premier tour du monde musical avec le Prince Lawsha band (Californie et Tahiti :octobre 99) et à la tête d'un quintette pour 3 concerts. (Nouméa- Nouvelle Calédonie : novembre 99).

 

•  Il se produit dans différents festivals de l'été 2000 avec sa nouvelle formation de musique métissée, le Didgeridoo Orchestra et il est le premier musicien de jazz invité du festival Pablo Casals de Prades à l'occasion de son cinquantième anniversaire pour un programme consacré à Duke Ellington. Participe au printemps 2001 aux festivals de Moscou (Didgeridoo Orchestra ) et Manille où il enregistre aux côtés du célèbre quartet philippin  Buhai  . A l'automne 2001, il effectue une tournée européenne avec le Prince lawsha band et enregistre deux CD sous son nom : l'un avec le Didgeridoo orchestra (distribution Night and Day) , l'autre consacré à la musique de Charles Trenet avec son quintet et la Camérata de France sous la direction de Daniel Tosi.

 

•  Il joue à San-José et Santa-Cruz (Californie) au printemps 2002 et participe au cours de l'été à plusieurs festivals dont celui de Montpellier, Radio-France. Il se produit en septembre salle Cortot à Paris et en Suisse dans un nouveau programme trompette classique, trompette jazz avec Guy Touvron, trompettiste classique et un trio de jazz piano, contrebasse, batterie.

 

•  Il est en tournée en Iran en juin 2003 (enregistrement d'un CD avec l'ensemble de musique traditionnelle Sharghi ) et se produit en juillet au sein du quintet de Michel Legrand au club Lionel Hampton hôtel Méridien Paris, et aux festivals de Marciac, Toronto, Porquerolles, Crest jazz vocal..En décembre 2003 il est tournée dans l'océan indien (Maurice Réunion) et en mars 2004 en tournée en Egypte conclue par un concert à l'opéra du Caire.

 

•  Il est en tournée au Pakistan en juin 2004 avec des musiciens de musique traditionnelle pakistanaise ; le CD Swingin' Trénet est distribué en septembre 2004 et une tournée nationale de 18 concerts accompagne cette sortie. Tournée en Californie et Polynésie française en avril 2005 avec le sextet de Prince Lawsha . Concerts en Russie avec le sextet de Michel Legrand (mai 2005) ; Il est invité comme soliste du Paris Jazz Big band au festival de Marciac (août 2005) et se produit à l'université de Santa Barbara (Californie) début décembre, avec le quartet californien de Rob Wallace.

 

•  En mars 2006 le CD Alain Brunet/Didgeridoo project (Cristal records/Abeille est distribué en Europe, Russie, Canada et une tournée de 20 concerts commence à Montélimar (Drôme) pour se terminer à Bruxelles.

 

•  Il crée début août au Perthus (Pyrénées orientales) un poème musical consacré à l'année 1936 intitulé 1936 : des fleurs et des pleurs  ; en octobre il participe au festival de jazz de La Rochelle (concert Trenet) et il est soliste invité des choeurs CantaRéunion et les Messagers du Gospel pour 4 concerts sur l'île de la Réunion.

 

•  Il est invité début janvier 2007 à New York à participer à l'enregistrement du dernier CD du chanteur californien Prince Lawsha aux côtés de Kenny Baron (piano), Charnette Moffette (contrebasse), Kenny Washington (batterie). En mai il est invité à jouer à Lima (Pérou) avec plusieurs formations péruviennes. Il participe aux festivals de l'été 2007 et enregistre en août et en octobre avec la chanteuse philippine et Michel Legrand un CD intitulé  Charito meets Michel Legrand

 

•  Concert à Berlin en septembre 2007 puis tournée de 6 concerts en Inde conclue par l'enregistrement d'un CD avec Luc Fenoli (guitare), Jean-Louis Dô (percussioniste et sound designer,Manosh Bardan (tablas), Debi Prasad (sarod) en février 2008

 

•  Tournée de 3 concerts avec Perujazz au Pérou (Lima, Arequipa, Puira) en avril 2008 et participation à la fête de la musique de San Francisco le 21 juin 2008. Joue dans différents festivals en août 2008 avec un hommage à Miles Davis en sextet. Est invité au festival « Vienne à Sydney » en Australie en octobre 2008 avec le trio de P Khoury et F Brun et au festival Sicilia jazz (décembre 2008) pour deux concerts à Catane et Syracuse afin d'y jouer la musique de Serge Gainsbourg.

 

•  Initie et participe au premier festival de jazz et musique métisses de Doha (Quatar) en février 2009 puis à une tournée avec la chanteuse japonaise Charito en Polynésie française (avril 2009). Crée le 6 mars, le poème musical 1939, Retirada et désillusions dans le cadre du 70ème anniversaire de la Retirada à Argeles-sur-Mer. Festival de Bastia en avril et festivals d'été (Buis les Baronnies/St Genis des Fontaines et St Remy de Provence). Une nouveau CD sort fin mai enregistré avec AKPE Motion (DOCKS) : concerts à Marseille fin mai

•  Concerts au Brésil (Brasilia) autour de l'ouvre de Gainsbourg les 7/8 septembre et tournée aux USA ( Alabama/Texas/Californie/New York) fin octobre début novembre 09)

Trumpet player and composer

 

•  He begins to practice trumpet at ten and studies with French classical star trumpeter Guy Touvron.

 

•  Studying at the Sorbonne University in Paris, he is the first French student to write a musicology these about jazz music.

 

•  He creates a jazz department in the music conservatory of Romans and conducts big band with Michel Petrucciani as piano player. Many others performed too with that band from 1976 to 1983 : Clark Terry, Sonny Stitt, Lee Konitz and Martial Solal.

 

•  During the seventies, he performs with his quartet and invites a lot of major French musicians to play with him : Daniel Humair; Henri Texier; Michel Portal; Aldo Romano; etc..

 

•  In 1979, he is a member of a broadcasting European big band for performances in north of the Europe.

 

 

•  In 1980, an Eastern African tour is concluded by the record of a new CD on the theme of free music.

 

 

•  From 1984 to 1990 he leaves French jazz scene to work for French government.

 

•  He records in 1990 the first CD for "Label Bleu" Rominus with a new quartet in which features Didier Lockwood.

 

•  He works on a French pop singer's music : Serge Gainsbourg from 1992 to 1995. He performs in several jazz fest : Montreux; Nice; Paris; Varsovie; New Orleans; Newport in Saratoga; Montreal ; Toronto; Roma; etc.and records a CD for Warner Music: Alain Brunet plays Gainsbourg .

 

•  He gets an American and Canadian tour in 1995 and records a CD in L.A. on the theme of French songs: French melodies in L.A

 

•  He performes as a solist with classical formations: Orchestra of Marseille's Opera ; Chambord's Sinfonietta  ; Camerata of France.

 

•  François Reichenbach honors him with a pictural portrait and he presents with Eve Ruggieri several "musiques au Coeur", famous French TV show, dedicated to jazz ( Antenne 2 1992- 1994).

 

•  Since 1996, he is a member of Prince Lawsha's sextet, a US West Coast band which recorded two CD: Planetary Rhythms album , Oakland CA in august 1997 and Sweet Mango album , Oakland CA in may 1999 under Kenneth Nash's direction.

 

•  In 1999, he plays around the world : French Polynesia with the Lorient big band in April and with Prince Lawsha's band in October, Manila ( French Spring in Manila) in June with Ugoy Ugoy band, California and New Caledonia in October and in November with the Prince Lawsha band and the New Caledonia piano player, Bruno Zamchetta.

 

•  In 2000, he creates a new band "Alain Brunet the Didgeridoo Orchestra" with a didgeridoo's player from south Pacific, Burk. He performs in Marciac jazz fest and several concerts in the south of France. He is the first jazz musician invited by Prades's famous classical Pablo Casals music fest in August. In December, he plays with the Romans's Symphonic Orchestra and his quintet for a tribute to Charles Trenet.

 

•  In spring 2001, he performs in Moscow's bohemian jazz fest then in Guadeloupe, in Reunion Island and at the French spring in Manila (Philippines).

 

In October he performs with Prince Lawsha's band for an European tour. He records two CD at the end of the year: one with the didgeridoo orchestra and one about Charles Trénet's music with his quintet and a string orchestra.

 

•  In 2002, he performs again in overseas islands : Martinique, Guadeloupe and St Pierre et Miquelon. During the summer, he is invited by "le festival de Radio France et de Montpellier" for one concert with the didgeridoo orchestra broadcast on France Musique. At that same period, he also performs in different festivals in the South of France.

 

•  In 2003 a new CD is distributed: Alain Brunet and the didgeridoo orchestra Night and Day company. In may an other CD will be distributed too : Alain Brunet and strings plays Charles Trenet . In the summer 2003, he performs in Teheran with traditional Iranians musicians , in Toronto jazz fest, Marciac jazz fest, Porquerolles jazz fest and with Michel Legrand quintet in Le Meridien at Paris. In December he leaves for an Indian Ocean tour (La Reunion, Maurice) for four concert and workshops.

 

•  In 2004, he writes and creates a suite for symphonic orchestra, didgeridoo solo and jazz quintet (march 28, 29 in Romans, Drôme) with the Romans symphonic orchestra and the didgeridoo orchestra. In April he is in Egypt with Prince Lawsha band for six concerts and one at the Cairo opera. In June (16-26) he is invited by the French Embassy to perform for French music fest with three Pakistanis musicians in Islamabad and Lahore (Pakistan)

 

•  In September, for the release of the CD Alain Brunet Swingin' Trenet (Cristal records/Harmonia Mundi) he makes a French and Belgium tour with 18 concerts with his quintet which associates his quintet with a chamber orchestra.

 

•  In May 2005 he has a Californian and Polynesian tour with Prince Lawsha band. In June he performs with French pianist and composer Michel Legrand in Russia (Moscow and St Petersburg). In August, he is invited as a solist by the Paris Jazz Big Band at the Marciac's Festival which is the biggest jazz fest in France. In December he is invited by Rob Wallace to perform in University of California Santa Barbara .

 

•  In March 2006 he has a French tour of 14 concerts for the release of the CD Alain Brunet Didgeridoo project (Cristal records/Abeille). He creates in Le Perthus, on the French boarder of Spain, a musical poem about the year 1936 whose title is : 1936/Flowers and tears . In October he performs at La Rochelle jazz fest with his quintet (Charles Trenet's music) and on Ile de La Reunion with a gospel choir.

 

•  In January 2007, he is invited by Prince Lawsha, Californian singer, to perform at a recording session in New York City with Kenny Baron (piano), Charnette Moffette (bass), Kenny Washington (drums).

 

 

•  In May 2007, he is invited by Peru Jazz, jazz quartet from Lima to perform for three concerts in Lima. During the summer he performs with Charito Filipina singer who lives in Tokyo and records a CD with her and Michel Legrand with Michel Legrand's songs. He also plays 1936 Flowers and tears in France and performs Gainsbourg with his quintet in Berlin in September of the same year.

 

•  In February 2008, he makes an India tour during three weeks with Manosh Bardan (tabla), Debi Prasad (sarod) Indian musicians and Luc Fenoli (guitar) and jean-Louis Do (percussions) ; they recorded a CD in Pondichery that will be release in 2009. In May he goes back to Lima for a Peru tour with Peru Jazz (Lima/Arequipa/Puira). He performs also in San Francisco and Santa-Cruz in June. He is invited in October in Australia (Jazz at Vienne) near Sydney and in December in Sicilia jazz to sing and play Serge Gainsbourg.

 

•  He initiates and participates in the first Jazz and Métisse Music Fest of Doha (Qatar) in February 2009, then in a tour with the Filipina singer Charito in French Polynesia in April 2009. He creates on March 6 th , the musical poem 1939, Retirada and disillusion created as part of the 70 th anniversary of the Retirada at Argeles-sur-Mer. He performs at Bastia jazz fest in April. He relaease a new CD with AKPE Motion (DOCKS) and performed with them at Marseille end of May. New concerts summer 09 in jazz fest and in September at Brasilia (Brasil) to play and sing Gainsbourg.
